Why Sing? by Larry Cockerham on Wednesday, Aug 13th, 2008 at 06:26 am
Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord;
      it is fitting for the pure to praise him.  Psalm 33:1

This verse from today's One Year Bible reading calls us to sing.  Why is singing so important?  To some it seems so frivolous and emotional.  If you read the Bible, especially the Psalms, you can see that it is very important in the life of a Christian.  It is associated with joy and with purity.

In the first place, singing stirs up and expresses joy.  It is a well known fact that you can't be depressed and sing songs of joy to the Lord at the same time.  Singing to the Lord lifts your spirit and focuses your thoughts on Him. That's the key.  Singing to the Lord is focusing on  Him, and he promises to keep us in perfect peace when our minds are stayed on Him. (Isa 26:3)

Secondly singing is fitting or appropriate for a godly person who wants to live a pure life.  Singing is a great key to not only emotional happiness but also to moral purity.  It is easy to understand the emotional part, but what about the purity.  What does singing have to do with godliness or purity?

Singing is a way of meditating on God and His goodness.  It purifies and protects our thoughts from other defiling or impure things.  It helps us to overcome in the battleground of our minds.

This is great news:  you can sing your way out of depression and temptation.  I know.  I have done it many times.  Other times I have muligrubed my way into depression or I have surrendered to comforting myself with impure thoughts.  When I choose to sing to the Lord, my mind is lifted up above life's problems and temptations.  Try it.  It works a lot better than murmuring, complaining and giving in.  "The joy of the Lord is my strength."
